Seller verification
Identity, address, bank details, ownership history, and any relationship with the buyer may be checked.
Direct answer: A privately purchased asset may be financeable, but lender appetite is narrower and extra checks are common. The lender must be satisfied about the seller’s identity, legal title, asset condition and value, payment route, and the applicant’s affordability.
A dealer normally provides established trading details, warranties, and standard invoices. A private transaction may not offer the same protections, so lenders take additional steps to reduce fraud, title, condition, and valuation risk.
Identity, address, bank details, ownership history, and any relationship with the buyer may be checked.
Serial numbers, registration, title, finance searches, inspection, condition, provenance, and valuation may be required.
The lender controls payment to the verified seller. VAT treatment must be evidenced and should not be assumed in a private sale.
Hire purchase may be available where the lender can acquire good title to the asset and then finance it to the applicant. Availability varies by asset type, seller, and lender.
Private purchases can carry greater risk of misdescription, undisclosed finance, weak title, or limited recourse if defects emerge. Finance approval does not replace your own inspection and legal checks.
