How long has your business been trading?
Fleet finance lenders assess applications across four core dimensions: trading history, credit profile, deposit availability, and asset quality. Trading history is the most influential factor: lenders want to see that a business has been operating long enough to demonstrate stable revenue. Most mainstream commercial vehicle lenders require a minimum of 12–24 months of trading, with the most competitive rates available to businesses with three or more years of filed accounts. Start-up fleet operators are not excluded but typically face a smaller lender panel and may need to offer a deposit or personal guarantee to access funding.
Credit history affects both approval rates and the interest rate offered. A clean business credit profile, with no CCJs, defaults, or missed payments, opens the door to the full panel of specialist commercial vehicle lenders and the most competitive rates. Where CCJs exist, the picture is more nuanced: a single CCJ that has been satisfied, or a historic default with subsequent clean trading, may still be acceptable to a number of lenders on our panel. Adverse credit does not automatically mean no, but it does mean a broker who understands which lenders operate in that space is essential.
Using an independent broker like Sorbus Finance significantly improves approval chances by ensuring your application is presented to the right lenders in the right way. We prepare a comprehensive funding pack that highlights your business's strengths, including contracts, revenue, and asset quality, and anticipates likely lender concerns. For start-up fleets, we can identify lenders who specialise in early-stage transport businesses, often with faster decision timescales than mainstream banks. Our whole-of-market approach means no unnecessary credit searches with lenders unlikely to approve your profile.
