Funding the large mandatory payments every professional practice faces
Professional indemnity insurance renewal and tax bill payments are predictable, large, and non-negotiable. They land every year. Yet most practices either drain working capital reserves to cover them or use whatever overdraft is available rather than using the products designed specifically for this purpose.
PI insurance premium finance is typically cheaper than a business loan because the policy itself is the security. Tax bill funding is arranged quickly ahead of HMRC deadlines. Sorbus Finance compares both across our lender panel.
PI premium finance and tax funding: how each works
PI insurance premium finance
What it is
A lending product where the insurance policy is the security. Instead of paying the full annual premium upfront, the practice pays monthly instalments to a premium finance provider who has paid the insurer in full.
Why it's often cheaper than a loan
Because the lender's exposure is bounded by the value of the unearned premium on the policy, the rate is typically lower than an unsecured business loan. The policy can be cancelled and the unearned portion recovered if the borrower defaults, which limits the lender's risk.
The key point most practices miss
Any insurer's policy can be funded by a premium finance provider. You are not limited to the finance arrangement your insurer or broker offers. An independent broker can help compare available premium finance providers.
The risk to understand
Missing a monthly payment can trigger policy cancellation. Treat it as a fixed commitment, not a discretionary payment.
VAT and Corporation Tax funding
What it is
A short-term business loan arranged to cover a VAT or Corporation Tax liability ahead of the HMRC payment deadline. Funds are released to the practice's bank account; the practice pays HMRC on time and repays the lender in monthly instalments over three to twelve months.
Why practices use it
Profitability and cashflow are not the same thing. A strong trading year can produce a large tax bill at a moment when working capital is committed elsewhere: growth investment, a new lateral hire, or a seasonal cashflow dip.
How quickly it can be arranged
For established practices with clear trading history, typically two to five working days. The earlier the call, the more lender options are available.
This is not a Time to Pay arrangement
Tax funding from a commercial lender is separate from HMRC's own Time to Pay scheme. It allows you to pay HMRC in full and on time, with the lender managing the repayment schedule.
Deadlines to plan around
Contact us at least two to three weeks before any deadline for the best range of lender options.
Why compare premium finance independently?
Most professional practices renew their PI insurance through a specialist broker who may offer premium finance from a single provider they have a commercial arrangement with. The rate on that facility may or may not be the most competitive available. Sorbus Finance has no preferred premium finance provider arrangement: we compare the rates available for your policy value and recommend accordingly. For large PI premiums, even a modest rate difference translates to a meaningful saving over the year.
